An Introduction, or an Apology to Mr. B

You Haven't Seen That Yet?

My name is Emily and I love two things — writing and melting my millennial brain in front of screens. There are a few reasons why I’ve decided to start this blog, which I’ll gladly expand upon here.

1. To marry my two aforementioned loves

2. To stop disappointing people in my life

3. This is a desperate cry for attention

4. To give myself an excuse to watch movies

5. To put my B.S. in Media and Communication Studies to good use???

6. To find a sense of purpose during these awful Coronavirus times

Settling in for the millionth viewing of The Lion King, I’m sure (ca. 1998)

Movies have been an important part of my life since I can remember. As a child of the mid-‘90s, most of my early memories revolve around lying on my living room floor, glued to the TV, watching the same animated VHS tapes ad nauseam (101 Dalmatians, The Lion King, and Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island).

As I grew older, my tastes branched out, and I’ve since seen a wider variety of movies. Some of my favorites include Edward Scissorhands, The King’s Speech, and The Night of the Hunter. I enjoy anything from low brow comedies like Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, to unabashedly ’80s thrillers like Manhunter, to action-packed superhero movies like the Marvel Cinematic Universe collection, and many, many others.

But let’s swing back to number two on my list of reasons for starting this blog: to stop disappointing people in my life. Specifically, my former PE teacher. Let’s call him Mr. B.

Mr. B and I have a long, boring history that I won’t go into right now. As mentioned, he was a teacher of mine, but he’s grown to be much more. We’ve known each other since 2003, and within those eighteen years he’s become a mentor, a life guru, and most importantly, a friend.

That doesn’t stop him from routinely calling me a disappointment, though.

I can’t even begin to express how many times I’ve seen the light go out of his eyes when he’s asked me if I’ve seen a certain movie and I have told him no. I’ve watched years get taken off of his lifespan, I’ve seen smiles disappear in milliseconds, and I’ve personally broken his heart on many occasions.

“You don’t like sci-fi?”

“I blocked out the memory of you telling me you don’t like zombies because it was that soul-crushing.”

“You’ve watched Mindhunter on Netflix a million times, but you’ve never seen a single Star Wars movie?”

I know. And I think I should be sorry.

In a strange turn of events, Mr. B has given me more homework in the past two years than he ever did as my teacher. Watch this, read that, stop being such a disappointment, etc. But as I’m not getting graded on any of these “assignments,” and I’m not worried about what colleges I’m going to apply to anymore, most of my homework is in the books as INCOMPLETE.

So really, I guess the seventh and most important reason for starting this blog is that it’s my way of making Mr. B proud.

I vow to watch a bunch of movies that I’ve never seen before — yes, even some sci-fi — and write my opinions on them. If you’ve found yourself here and you’re still reading this, then I hope you stick with me, and I hope you enjoy.
